Posted by Yeovil Town Council | Nominations are being sought for this year's Mayor's Award. As in previous years, a silver salver will be presented by the Mayor to an individual or an organisation providing a tangible service to the community, as a token of recognition and thanks on behalf of the Town. The presentation will take place at the Annual Town Meeting on 4 May 2010. The award is not intended for people who earn a living from their service, but rather for those who receive only a token payment or who provide a service out of the goodness of their heart. Those nominated need not live in Yeovil, but must be active within the Town. The closing date for nominations is Thursday 22 April 2010. Nominations should be sent to:
Alan Tawse Town Clerk Yeovil Town Council Town House 19 Union Street Yeovil BA20 1PQ
Alternatively, they may be sent by email to alan.tawse@yeovil.gov.uk

Posted by Yeovil District Hospital NHS Foundation Trust | 4am Friday 26th February - 6pm Sunday 28th February 4am Thursday 18th March -6pm Monday 22 March
Yeovil District Hospital is building a new unit to ensure the equipment we use in our operating theatres continues to be sterilized to the highest standards.
Over the next few weeks the new building will be lifted on to the hospital roof by a large crane. To enable this to happen we have no choice but to temporarily close off a significant area of our main car park.
We realise that this is going to be an inconvenience and we apologise. We are doing our very best to ensure that parking remains available in the lower half of the car park and in an adjoining staff car park at the far end of the hospital for inpatients, outpatients and disabled visitors- this will be clearly signposted. Car park attendants will be asking for proof of appointments and admissions before giving access to these parking areas to ensure they are reserved for those most in need.
We are asking visitors to please find alternative parking in any of the town centre car parks which are just a short walk from the hospital via the underpass.
Thank you for your co-operation it is much appreciated.

Posted by The Editors | A dad from Yetminister Nick MacBean hopes to turn tragedy into hope with a marathon bike ride in memory of his baby daughter who died of meningitis last year. Abbie and Isobel MacBean were born a month early and caught a life threatening infection. Isobel had to be resuscitated after she stopped breathing but went on to beat the illness. Tragically Abbie developed meningitis and died after a two year battle. Oliver the couple's six year old son suffers from a rare genetic condition. Nick their dad wishes to raise £10,000 for the Children,s Hospice South West as a thank you to staff at its Bristol branch, Chartlon Farm who helped them so much during this time. "We wouldn't have coped without the hospice, it wouold have been impossible. it got us through some really tough times and we owe the staff so much. It means a great deal to us to try and give something back." Any monies raised will go to help towards a new hospice in Cornwall.

Posted by Yeovil Town Council | The next stage of the switch to digital TV in the West Country is fast approaching and the switchover is about to start. The Mendip transmitter, which serves parts of Somerset, will be switched over in two stages. On 24 March 2010, analogue BBC Two is turned off and some BBC digital channels become available. On 7 April 2010, all the analogue channels are switched off and the remaining digital channels become available. Further details of how this will affect you, and where to get help is available by clicking here or by calling 08456 50 50 50. A number of towns in South Somerset, including Yeovil, have been the subject of case studies, which look at the options available for TV after the switchover. Further information is available by clicking here. The Switchover Help Scheme helps eligible people switch over one TV set to digital. It's available to those over 75, or have lived in a care home for six months or more, or get (or could get) certain disability benefits, or are registered blind or partially sighted. Click here for more information about the Help Scheme, or call free on 0800 40 85 900.

Posted by Yeovil Town Council | Yeovil is now the proud owner of its very own souvenir in the form of a tea towel - for the first time in history.
500 tea towels are now available from Yeovil Town Council's Offices in Union Street and from Yeovil Tourist Information Centre following hundreds of requests from visitors who complained that they could only find Somerset keepsakes, but no souvenirs from Yeovil on its own.
The requests were taken up by South Somerset District Council and Yeovil Town Council, who pooled their resources and commissioned a bespoke tea towel showing illustrations of local landmarks.
The towel includes illustrations of a helicopter, gloves, an apple tree, Yeovil Town House, Sidney Gardens and the Jack the Treacle Eater folly in Barwick.
The tea towels are now on sale for £3.90 with all costs covered by the retail price.
