Poundland was established in April 1990, with funds provided by the multi-million pound sale of an international wholesaling business.

A simple concept
Poundland's retailing concept is extremely simple: a range of more than 2000 items, each offered for sale at only £1 each – representing amazing value for money.

Our pilot store opened in the Octagon Centre, Burton-upon-Trent in December of 1990, followed by new stores in High Street, Meadowhall and other quality trading locations. Shoppers loved the concept, and so did fellow retailers and landlords. The stores proved to be a huge success. Meadowhall's success was repeated by further stores opening by the end of the year.

Company development produced rapid, yet carefully controlled growth
Surpassing our most optimistic trading expectations, Poundland has established a history of target-beating performance, and is now capitalising on the benefits and economies of scale available to a large, mature business.

Our development rationale ensures that the quality of support systems and our ability to manage the business effectively always exceeds the requirements of a rapidly expanding business. To this end, Poundland has invested substantially in the computerisation of stock control, distribution, financial and staff management systems.

Poundland is a retailer that has taken advantage of "leading edge" technology, providing management controls which are considered by many to be superior to those employed by other retailers.

Toys: Poundland sells all kinds of toys for kids of all ages, including soft toys, board games, fancy dress, vehicles, dolls and educational games. Plus we’re always on the look out for the next craze, such as Fluffy Foam that sold 300,000 units this summer.

DIY: This includes decorating tools and equipment, security and car and bike accessories.

Batteries: Poundland aims to sell the best range of quality batteries at the best value, with brands such as Memorex, Hyundai, Duracell, Sony and Panasonic.

Beauty: Offers a range of high value toiletries, from hair products to body lotions and dental care, with brands such as Johnson & Johnson, VO5, Aquafresh and Cussons.

Household: Poundland has an extensive household range, including cleaning liquids, materials and equipment. Deals constantly change and include great value offers on brands such as Flash, Domestos, CIF, Ajax and Fairy.

Party: Poundland sells a wide range of products for celebrations including party tableware, gift wrap, gift bags and bows, cards, balloons and assorted party packs.

Stationery: Poundland stocks a range of office, school and home essentials as well as a wide range of novelty writing and colouring materials. This category also covers diaries, calendars and telephone address books.

Pet: Poundland's pet range covers food, toys, accessories and healthcare, concentrating mainly on cats and dogs. We also offer a range of wild bird foods.

Food and Drink: Poundland has a wide range of products covering confectionery, snacking, soft cold and hot drinks along with a wide range of everyday essential products and "Wow" offers throughout the stores. Brands such as Walkers, Cadbury's, Nestle and Tetley are just a few of the brands we offer our customers.

Gardening: Poundland's gardening range covers everything from bulbs and seeds to fencing and decorative and fun gardenware, as well as providing compost, fertilisers and tools for both adult and child. Poundland’s gardening range is seasonal, offering a one-stop shop for our customers all year round.

Homewares: From kitchen and cookware to soft furnishings, Poundland sells a wide variety of homewares for every lifestyle.

Entertainment: This department includes audio and visual goods, such as CDs, DVD's, videos and great value blank media. You will also find computer accessories and books in this category

Clothing: Poundland sells underwear, hosiery, fashion accessories and footwear for the whole family.

Baby: Poundland's quality Baby department ranges from bathtime toiletries such as shampoo, baby lotions & creams to babycare accessories including nappies and wipes and feeding equipment such as bottles, cups & bibs. Not forgetting baby clothing and toys.
