Flying Colours is the name of a 1 million appeal to transform the patient environment at Yeovil District Hospital over the next two years.

The hospital has established a reputation as one of the top-performing in the country, delivering the latest, high quality care in some of the shortest waiting times.

But many of the busiest wards and patient areas date back to the early 1970s, and need upgrading using the latest techniques which are known to boost patient recovery. This includes the best use of colour, lighting, interior design and the arts to provide an environment that is comfortable and soothing; one that helps patients feel better, visitors more welcome and relatives relaxed.

Yeovil District Hospital has lots going for it, in addition to its top quality services and dedicated staff. The building is basically in good shape, easy to get around, with lots of natural light; features that will be enhanced as part of an exciting pilot programme for the NHS nationally.

Work will be carried out on wards and public areas as funds roll in over the next two years. Starting with the main hospital entrance, Flying Colours will gradually light up lobbies and stairwells, lifts, corridors and waiting areas as well as main wards and approaches to operating theatres. Important areas for tranquillity, including the Jubliee Garden and the Chapel, will be enhanced.

Flying Colours was launched in May 2004 with pledges of around 300,000 already secured, including a generous 150,000 target from a major local sponsor Screwfix Direct.

But the appeal needs to reach the 1 million mark by the end of 2006, and we need YOUR help. Flying Colours is aimed at everyone who values their local hospital - staff, patients, carers, local residents, businesses, schools and community groups.

Giving is not just about money. The success of this appeal also depends on harnessing the goodwill of may volunteers to help organise and run fund-raising events. Every penny counts.

Flying Colours is also supported by the Western Gazette, and by local MP David Laws, who said: "I very much support this excellent initiative, and hope that the local community will give its full support - as it so often does. Our aim should be top quality healthcare in a top quality environment - that is what the Flying Colours Appeal will help deliver."

Sir Peter Morris, President of the Royal College of Surgeons, visited Yeovil District Hospital in 2003. He said: "I was most impressed with the standard of care that is being delivered at all levels...However the physical structure of the hospital looks tired, as it is entitled to look after 30 years! Thus this appeal to secure funds from the people and businesses of Yeovil, to improve the environment around in the hospital, has my very strongest support."

Lady Gass, Lord Lieutenant of Somerset, said: "There is definite evidence of the good effect which environment can have on both rates of recovery and on patients' general well-being. This accords with Yeovil Hospital's constant search for new ways of supporting the process of healing, and improving patients' experience. Yeovil is a place with a strong community and a sense of pride. It needs a hospital which provides excellence of treatment in a welcoming atmosphere for all in the area. I fully support the plans for the future."

Jonathan Ockrim, consultant general and laparascopic (keyhole) surgeon at Yeovil District Hospital, said: "We know that if patients fell better about where they are, they get more quickly."
