WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT OF US?

We are a Somerset County Council Department. We do not charge for attending calls, as we are funded through local Council Tax. Your Fire Service is provided at a cost of �25.15 per head of population living in Somerset.

We provide emergency attendance at fires and other emergencies, and also provide specialist fire safety services. We run twenty four operational fire stations at strategic locations around the County, with trained firefighters, supporting officers, fire engines and specialist equipment available for use in an emergency 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

We aim to ensure that your home, work place and anywhere that you may visit in Somerset are safe from fire and have adequate means of escape.

ONLY DO WE FIGHT FIRES

We also rescue trapped people from road accidents and machinery, rescue animals, deal with chemical incidents and other special services such as flooding and environmental spillages.

FIRE AND COMMUNITY SAFETY

Fire safety is an important area for us. We are the enforcing authority for a substantial amount of fire safety legislation, for example, in hotels, factories, offices, shops and railway premises. We also carry out inspections of premises on behalf of social services, the health authority, licensing justices and the Department for Education and Employment, to name but a few.

Community safety has become an increasing focus for the Brigade in recent years. We aim to reduce death, injury and property loss through proactive community safety. We are actively involved in initiatives such as smoke detector fitting, domestic sprinkler promotion, electric blanket testing, young arsonists programmes and working with disaffected youth. This is a growing area for the Brigade and one which our staff are discovering their hidden talents. Our Community Fire Safety Helpline is (01823) 364507.
