Noë! Noë! Baroque music for Advent and Christmas

05 December 2018

St Andrew's Church, Preston Grove, Yeovil BA20 2BQ

Yeovil Chamber Choir's concert will be directed by Peter Parshall, and will celebrate music written during the Baroque period.  Charpentier's Messe de Minuit incorporates ten old French carol tunes from the 16th and 17th centuries. Bach's famous Cantata 140 was written in 1731 as music to be included in a church service. Despite its simplicity, it's now one of his most famous thanks to its inclusion of a well-known tune - 'Sleepers wake'. Strangely, this now famous and popular cantata was rarely heard in the years after it was written. The 27th Sunday after Trinity, for which it was written, only appears once every eleven years in the liturgical calendar - when Easter is celebrated very early in the season. The choirs will be accompanied by an orchestra led by Anna Cockcroft, and Peter Lea-Cox is organist for the evening.
