St Bartholomew's Street Fair

St Bartholomew's Fair is an annual event in Crewkerne. The fair dates back to Saxon Times and was recorded in the Domesday book.
A chartered fair was a major annual regional market granted the right to be held by the King. The charter was reputed to have been granted in the time of Henry III (1207-1272) probably around 1215 but that document is lost and the earliest surviving record in The British Museum is a court record of 1280.
There has been a funfair in the main street of the town (the A30) since at least 1861 which was
accompanied by a major traders market.
Although diminished in scale in the post war years the fair is a survivor. The owner of the Charter, The Rotary Club of Crewkerne District Trust, is reviving the street market and following the success of last year are increasing the number of pitches in the stall market available to traders.
