A Banquet of Voices: heavenly music for Advent

To mark the season of Advent Yeovil Chamber Choir, which is now in its 21st year of singing, will be joining with Axminster Chamber Choir to give two performances of music scored for 8 voices.

Judy Martin, the Musical Director of both choirs, has devised a programme of choral music all written with Advent in mind; the visitation to Mary, the witness of the prophets, and the promise of the Second Coming. The combined choir pieces (Guerrero, Victoria, Praetorius, Tallis) are all in eight parts, but also included are some pieces with smaller scoring so that the choirs can perform on their own, eg Benjamin Britten Hymn to the Virgin, Bob Chilcott Even Such is Time and John Tavener The Lamb.

Tickets are £10, to include refreshments in the interval on Saturday contact the Choir Treasurer by phone or email.

Mon 01 DecemberNHS Blood and Transplant Blood Donor Session

NHS Blood and Transplant is asking blood donors in Yeovil to make an appointment to donate blood to help keep stocks healthy throughout the autumn months.

Sessions are between 13:00 - 15:15 and 16:45 - 19:00.

Although overall blood use within the NHS has reduced, thanks to improvements in clinical and surgical practices, hospitals and patients still rely on more than 7,000 people attending a donation session every day across England and North Wales.

It is important that vital blood stocks are maintained at all times, as red blood cells have a shelf life of just 35 days and platelets a shelf life of only seven days. NHS Blood and Transplant needs to collect enough blood in the right quantities to meet patient needs and regular donors are crucial in enabling us to do so.

Geraldine Parker Lead Donor Relations Manager for NHS Blood and Transplant, said: “We need to maintain healthy blood stocks all year round to make sure patients get the blood they need whenever they need it.  Some of our donors might have recently been abroad to somewhere that means they need to take a short break from donating.  So whether you’ve donated before or are thinking about giving blood for the first time, check out if your foreign holiday has affected whether you can donate now.  If you can donate, please book an appointment to give blood and save lives. You never know when you or your loved one may need a life saving transfusion.”

Without the support of people like you we would not be able to collect the blood needed to treat patients.  I would therefore like to take this opportunity to thank you on behalf of the NHS Blood and Transplant and all those who benefit from local support in encouraging donors to give blood in your area.
