Sun 04 December - Fri 23 DecemberSanta Specials

Santa Specials dates:- 4th Dec, 11th Dec, 17th Dec, 18th Dec and 23rd Dec 2016

Booking is essential.

The Santa Specials at the Yeovil Railway Centre are an enjoyable experience for everyone from ages 1 to 100. You start your visit with a train ride behind one of our steam locomotives, we have a choice of a heritage carriage or a brake van (with a real coal fire) to ride in. Our track is about 1/3rd mile long, so the train ride is full of fun for the children but not long enough for them to get bored. Visitors then make their way to the ex GWR Transfer Shed, where Santa will be ready in his grotto.

The cafe is also located inside the Transfer Shed, and your ticket entitles you to free tea, coffee or squash and a mince pie for the adults and biscuit for the children, just show the tickets at the cafe counter. We should have one or more model railway layouts running, and from the balcony in the Transfer Shed snow and bubble machines provide a truly exciting experience for the little ones.

Thu 08 DecemberReserve Collection Tour

The Fleet Air Arm Museum's Reserve Collection is now larger than many other entire aircraft museums and is housed in a purpose built and climate-controlled building called Cobham Hall.

Cobham Hall is now bulging with our precious assortment of all things "naval aviation heritage" as we just keep on adding to it! So much so that sadly we are unable to conduct our regular annual Open Day.

There is simply not the space to accommodate all our visitors and enthusiasts all at once. With this in mind, we fully appreciate the interest to still get 'behind the scenes' and as such will be holding a series of dates in 2016 for special guided tours. These will however commence with a one off day on 18th November, 2015.

Aero Hall - A one hour whistle stop tour with our Aircraft Curator and/or Engineers

The aircraft housed in Cobham Hall are in various stages of preservation, repair or just storage. We have many rare examples that you will not see anywhere else in existence, included the world's oldest surviving aircraft carrier, the Lighter T3 which is on the National Register of Historic Vessels. This sixty feet long streamlined craft was towed behind fast RN destroyers, allowing aircraft to take off at sea during World War 1.

Two sessions per day– 10.00am and 12.00pm

All tours will be £12.00 per person, (£10 for SOFFAAM Members), places are limited and MUST be booked in advance via Museum Ticket Box. Price does not include access to the main Museum.

The Italian Connection: Christmas Music from the Italian Renaissance

Following highly successful collaborations during the previous two years, Axminster and Yeovil Chamber Choirs will be reuniting to perform a concert entitled “The Italian Connection – Music for the season of Christmas” at the beginning of December.

In all, over 40 local singers will take part in the concerts, which will be conducted by Peter Parshall who is director of both groups.

“This will be the third occasion on which the choirs have combined and I’m not sure at what stage these performances become a tradition!” says Peter. “Having the opportunity to combine two small chamber ensembles, however, enables us to tackle music in up to eight voice parts, which means that we can bring some rarely-heard gems of the repertoire to local audiences.”

Music by Palestrina, Victoria, Marenzio, Arcadelt and Mouton, amongst others, will feature during the concerts.

Sat 29 AprilYeovil Town Criers Competition 2017

Each year in April or May, Town Criers come from far and wide to keep up the ancient tradition of crying and to compete in the annual Yeovil Town Criers' Competition.

The Criers, who are members of the Ancient and Honourable Guild of Town Criers (AHGTC) provide a colourful spectacle by entertaining visitors throughout the day as each competitor performs their home town cry and a cry of their own choice in the Town's Open Air Entertainment Area in Middle Street - in the presence of the Mayor and Mayoress of Yeovil.

In Medieval England, Town Criers were the chief means of news communication with the people of the town since many could not read or write. Royal proclamations, local byelaws, market days and adverts were all proclaimed by a bellman or crier throughout the centuries.

Town Criers often dress elaborately, by a tradition dating to the 18th century, which includes a coloured robe, breeches, black boots and a tricorn hat. They carry a handbell to attract people's attention, as they shout the words "Oyez, Oyez, Oyez!" before making their announcements.

Trophies are presented to the winner and runners up in the competition, and awards are also given for the best dressed Crier and Escort. All competitors are awarded a certificate and presented with a memento of the event.
