Sun 26 MarchGreat Somerset Abseil in aid of St. Margaret’s Hospice

St. Margaret's Hospice is organising a sponsored abseil.

The entry fee is £25 with a suggested sponsorship total of £75. When booking please specify if you would prefer a slot between 11am - 2pm, or 2pm - 5pm. You will be allocated a time nearer the event. Participants must be over 16 years old and must be taller than 5ft.

Ann Lee, St. Margaret's CEO, has put her money where her mouth is, so to speak, and signed up to be the first facing the drop. A 100ft crane will be situated at the Racecourse with challengers suspended from the top before making their way down to the crowds below.

St. Margaret's cares for over 3,200 people each year with the majority choosing to receive this care at home. Most of us can't imagine the fear that people with a life-limiting illness face, but by enabling them to be cared for where they feel most comfortable, St. Margaret's can at least give them the strength to face the journey ahead of them.

"Facing fear and being scared is exactly why I wanted to sign up for this challenge. 1 in 3 people in Somerset will need the support of St. Margaret's in their lifetime. I want every one of these people, to know that St. Margaret's is there for them and that we will face the fear together, making each day count" says Ann.

Ann has set herself a target of raising £1,000 and will be asking everyone she knows to sponsor her, so be warned! If everyone taking part raised just £75, this would pay for a day of St. Margaret's care across Somerset by St. Margaret's Community Care Team.

If you are interested in challenging yourself while raising money for St. Margaret's visit www.st-margarets-hospice.co.uk and search 'abseil'.

Sat 29 AprilYeovil Town Criers Competition 2017

Each year in April or May, Town Criers come from far and wide to keep up the ancient tradition of crying and to compete in the annual Yeovil Town Criers' Competition.

The Criers, who are members of the Ancient and Honourable Guild of Town Criers (AHGTC) provide a colourful spectacle by entertaining visitors throughout the day as each competitor performs their home town cry and a cry of their own choice in the Town's Open Air Entertainment Area in Middle Street - in the presence of the Mayor and Mayoress of Yeovil.

In Medieval England, Town Criers were the chief means of news communication with the people of the town since many could not read or write. Royal proclamations, local byelaws, market days and adverts were all proclaimed by a bellman or crier throughout the centuries.

Town Criers often dress elaborately, by a tradition dating to the 18th century, which includes a coloured robe, breeches, black boots and a tricorn hat. They carry a handbell to attract people's attention, as they shout the words "Oyez, Oyez, Oyez!" before making their announcements.

Trophies are presented to the winner and runners up in the competition, and awards are also given for the best dressed Crier and Escort. All competitors are awarded a certificate and presented with a memento of the event.

Private Lives

Private Lives is a superbly crafted comedy of manners. The humour lies in the situation, the cleverly drawn characters and the easy wit of the lines. It was was first performed in 1930 with Noel Coward and Gertrude Lawrence in the title roles and a young Laurence Olivier playing the main support. The plot is driven by the interactions between two newly married couples, Elyot and Sybil, and Amanda and Victor. The newlyweds find themselves honeymooning in the same hotel in France and sharing a terrace. The problem is that Elyot and Amanda have already been married before - to one another!

Having fallen out with their new spouses, Elyot and Amanda eventually realise that they are still in love with each and run away together to Amanda's flat in Paris. However, as the play progresses it becomes clear that, while they can't be apart, they can't live together either. Small tiffs eventually become a major brawl and by the time that Victor and Sybil arrive at the flat to collect their errant spouses the scene is set for almost any possible outcome.
