Westfield is a comprehensive, co-educational community school situated in the north western part of Yeovil. There are approximately 1070 pupils on roll and the school caters for the 11-16 age range. Westfield School was created in 1974, on comprehensive reorganisation in Yeovil, from the former grammar schools and a secondary modern school in Summerleaze Park. Since then, it has had a fully comprehensive intake, with pupils coming from some 21 partner primary schools in and around Yeovil and North Dorset. Such is the reputation of the school in the area that pupils travel in by public transport from as far afield as South Petherton, Sherborne, Queen Camel and Yetminster. The school gained Science Specialist Status in Septmber 2002.
Aims of the School
Westfield respects all pupils equally, but also recognises that they have different skills and abilities. We aim to develop these abilities to the full, to encourage every pupil to acquire an enthusiasm for learning and to discover the personal satisfaction obtained from hard work and achievement. Our curriculum is designed to develop the skills and abilities needed to become responsible members of society. This means not only the acquisition of the skills of communication, numeracy and problem solving which are the basic needs for employment, but also the stimulation of curiosity, imagination and creativity, and development of lively, enquiring minds.
We believe it is very important that pupils learn to work together in groups, acquire the ability to get on with others and have the opportunity to develop leadership and organisational skills.
We regard good manners, smart appearance, punctuality and reliability as equally important attributes of a responsible person.
At a deeper level we encourage an appreciation of human acheivement in art, music, science, technology and literature, a recognition of the importance of religious and moral values, and an understanding and tolerance of other cultures and religions.
Your child will be treated as an individual at Westfield School. He/She will be allocated to a tutor group and the Form Tutor will be responsible for the personal welfare of all pupils in their form. Their aim is to provide a point of reference for pupils and parents in a large school and to support the academic, personal and social development of each child.
The school is housed in two main buildings and your child will be based at the Lower School for the first two years, so that the transition from primary school will be that much easier. We are a caring school and we place a great deal of emphasis on the formulation of individual relationships. Pupils at Westfield are happy in their work and therefore they learn effectively.
Westfield is an open school and the parents are warmly invited to contact the appropriate member of staff whenever problems occur or advice is needed. We, in turn will be in touch with parents as the need arises. There are formal arrangements for the regular reporting and consultation for each year group.
