Update Road Closure - Babylon Hill - Penn Mill Postponed

05 October 2016

Planned Road Closure HAS been delayed

Sherborne Road from Penn Mill Roundabout to Flushing Meadows (F J Chalkes Entrance)

A major roadworks scheme in Yeovil has been put on hold to avoid disruption in the run-up to Christmas.  The work to Sherborne Road was due to be carried out in November but has been postponed by Somerset County Council after it spoke to businesses and people who live in the area.

The scheme had sparked mixed reactions from businesses around the area.
The council said it has reviewed the scheme and it will be completed once another project at the junction of Lyde Road and Sherborne Road has been completed.

Although the work would have missed an embargo on roadworks in Yeovil during December, the council has decided to push it back to avoid disruption to businesses in the first few weeks of the pre-Christmas trading period.

Councillor David Fothergill, Somerset County Council's cabinet member for highways, said: "It's fair to say there is never a good time to carry out major roadworks, especially when it involves a key route into one of our biggest towns. "We already put a stop to roadworks in December to minimise disruption for businesses, however, we do try to listen to our communities and we appreciate that November is still an important time for local traders.

"The last thing we want is to impact on anyone's Christmas, so I'm pleased we've been able to put the scheme on hold for now. I hope this decision will be welcomed and businesses, shoppers and local people across Yeovil can now enjoy the best possible start to the festive season."

The scheme was proposed because parts of Sherborne Road in Yeovil are showing signs of significant structural failure with 49 carriageway defects repaired since April 2015.
